Historic Beaufort NC
Beaufort, NC, has a rich heritage celebrated with historic sites, restored homes, and an array of festivals and more. The Beaufort Historical Society, or more specifically the Beaufort Historic Association (BHA), plays an important role in preserving the area’s history and charm. At Beau Coast West, we’re proud to sponsor the association, as well as events like the recent Old Homes Tour and More.
Founded in 1960, by local citizens without the aid of grants or public funds, the BHA has been dedicated to the research and documentation of the peoples, customs, lifestyles, and artifacts of Beaufort’s past, and its efforts to preserve the town’s historic identity in the future. This private, non-profit organization owns and operates the Beaufort Historic Site, which is an important part of Beaufort for locals and visitors. Situated in the heart of the town’s historic district, the two-acre Beaufort Historic Site encompasses six authentically restored buildings, including the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, as well as the Old Burying Grounds.
The 63rd Annual Old Homes Tour and More is one of the Association’s significant yearly events. It offers an intimate glimpse into the town’s heritage, showcasing some of its most historic and architecturally significant homes, gardens, churches, artist studios, as well as the authentically restored building of the Beaufort Historic Site. Tours allow participants to step back in time, wandering through homes that have been meticulously preserved and lovingly maintained. This year there were 11 private homes and 8 private gardens open to visitors, creating a wonderful opportunity to experience these stunning properties.
There were additional events throughout June leading up to the tours. There was a kick-off party with the annual Bartender’s Challenge, along with the opening showing of artwork by Janet Jaworski, who beautifully captures the nature and scenery of Beaufort. In addition, there was the Purvis Chapel Choir Concert, and the tour After Party, with food, drinks, and a book signing by Kristy Harvey for her new book, A Happier Life, set in Beaufort. The Tour finished with a Sunday Brunch, which was also the official launch of Harvey’s book.
By organizing events like the Old Homes Tour and more, Beaufort Historical Society helps preserve Beaufort’s historic landmarks and supports educational programs and more that keep the town’s history alive for future generations. As we build new homes that draw from the architectural history of Beaufort, we’re proud to sponsor events like this that add to the rich history of Beaufort. We invite you to contact us to learn more about our community and our beautiful coastal homes.
